Milk from all over

In spite of the devaluation in Brazil allows this country to remain competitive in its exports, its domestic market has caused a serious drop in purchasing power and confidence of investors, causing a recession that severely hit farmers. Most have not been able or has failed to react, but some are diversifying their products, as is the case at hand. The Eng. Gabio Pinto da Costa, owner of Fazenda Campo Belo, went much further than other establishments to try a new dairy production as the unproductive part of their field.

At a time when most producers are discouraged, Da Costa takes a chance and made a major investment in relation to their scale of operation. Of this form breaks in the dairy and the world of the buffalo in Brazil. To achieve its goal working with one of the best groups of technical and academic research in this field in Brazil.

Far beyond
The Fazenda Campo Belo em the municipality is located in Ibitinga, north of São Paulo, Brazil, in latitude 22 degrees south and is bisected by the River Jacaré-Guaçu. The region has a tropical climate with rainy summer and dry winter. Monthly temperatures vary from 17 to 25 º C.
Campo Belo has approximately 2,000 hectares, including the area occupied by orange. Livestock occupies some 1,200 hectares of high country pastures (mainly Bracchiaria) and some low to wetlands.
Initially, to contain large areas of wetlands (called there "varzeas"), was purchased a small piece of buffalo breeding sua assessing driving conditions therein adopted. Facing the best performance observed during the experiment, we sought to form a larger campus, targeting the production of animals for completion in poultry, which already was a traditional activity at the facility.
This raises the opportunity to market the milk from the buffalo herd, and expensive when compared with bovine, twice or more (R $ 0.50). And the buyer is a dairy plant in the area that goes to the production of mozzarella cheese. Campo Belo think for the future also incorporate the cheese. In terms of the possibility offered by this species to produce milk and calves for fattening also obtain, without major changes in infrastructure and health management, breeding and nutrition, it was decided to invest in produccioón buffalo.

After Algumas experiences, and consultation with agencies involved in research and extension, it was decided to raise the Murrah breed, and it also applied to all available technology to increase productivity on campus. The population base for the beginning of the work is established, with 8 bulls and 500 females, all animals registered. The Fazenda Campo Belo is implemented um Breeding Program based on the genetic evaluation of females and males under rigorous control of the quantity and quality of milk produced, in order to identify genotypes mejors the characteristics considered.
Genetic evaluations will be conducted by the Laboratory Animal Breeding Animal Science Department, Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary (FCAV) of the National University of São Paulo (UNESP).
